Tourists and sightseers stand on the relative safety of the observation deck, they are behind the protective railing and a free to focus their curiosity onto the black vista beyond. Their attention is captured not by the view, but the complete and total lack thereof. Paradoxically, there is no immediate sense of panic or concern expressed in the posture or actions of these people. They are confronted by a vision of doom; yet they appear to express only mild curiosity, or desire to capture this absurdity with their pocket cameras. Digitally manipulated photographs of passengers on the Staten Island ferry, 2009. |
